STREET N’ SPORTS : D’où te vient ta passion pour la musique ?
PIGEON JOHN : Tout a commencé lorsque j’ai entendu gamin les premières notes de Norwegian Wood des Beatles, jouées par mère, à une époque où nous habitions le Nebraska. Je suis tombé amoureux du son. Puis cela s’est reproduit lorsque j’ai découvert le hip-hop qui m’a séduit et littéralement pris dedans. J’ai aimé en particulier cette simplicité qui vous prend au plus profond. Que cela soit quelques notes jouées sur un piano ou un échantillon d’un MPC2000, cela procure tout ce dont votre âme souhaite et a besoin.
SNS : La France te connais grâce à ton album « Dragon Slayer » et en particulier au titre « The Bomb ». Qu’est-ce que cela te fait d’être apprécié en France ?
PJ : C’est une sensation absolument géniale et un plaisir énorme. Je me suis rendu ici pour la première fois il y a 3 ans et c’était vraiment fou, un moment privilégié. La première fois que j’ai joué à Paris en 2001, j’ai aimé le fait qu’il n’y avait aucune barrière linguistique ! C’est valable pour la musique en général qui créé un lien avec mon public. Que nous comprenions exactement les paroles ou pas, le sens des chansons se transmet avec toute son authenticité. Faire une tournée ici, c’est vraiment un rêve.
SNS : En tant que musicien étranger, que penses-tu du public français ?
PJ : Je pense que le public français a une très bonne oreille musicale et ressent bien la musique. Ils sont sensibles à la profondeur dans la création artistique, les français demandent et veulent de nouvelles expériences et ils sont très excités quand ils l’obtiennent. Je kiffe la façon qu’ils ont intégré l’art dans leur vie quotidienne au même titre qu’ils ont besoin d’eau et de nourriture. Nous avons tous besoin d’art mais c’est particulièrement vrai pour les français.
SNS : Comment pourrais-tu décrire ton nouvel album All The Roads ?
PJ : C’est un album comportant différents styles de musiques, fait de multiples sensations et ambiances. Avec Dragon Slayer je voulais le faire en solo et je n’ai donc pas fait appel à des guests spéciaux. Avec All the Roads, je voulais qu’il soit plus ouvert et j’ai laissé mes amis y participer, introduire plusieurs voix et instruments pour faire un grand album. En tant qu’artiste hip-hop, je m’imprègne de tout en incluant tous les styles de hip-hop et je laisse mon esprit s’exprimer. Je pense que les gens vont kiffer !
SNS : Le clip de ton titre « Boomerang » viens de sortir, et l’on peut voir le francais 20syl à tes cotés. Comment s’est passée cette collaboration ?
PJ : J’ai suivi les C2C durant leur tournée et j’ai appris à bien les connaître. C’était un moment important de ma vie. Ce sont de super gars et ils m’ont beaucoup aidé. Je leur ai montré des démos de mon nouvel album All The Roads dans le bus qui faisait la tournée et 20syl en particulier a vraiment accroché à Boomerang. A la fin de la tournée, ces garçons me manquaient vraiment. Quand vous voyager avec des personnes et que vous traversez des choses ensemble, ils deviennent comme une famille. Aussi quand la tournée s’est terminée j’ai frappé à la porte de 20syl pour qu’il soit sur une chanson et il m’a dit oui ! Il a beaucoup apporté sur l’enregistrement, ajouté des trucs en plus dans la production et puis nous avons passé du temps à Brooklyn et à Manhattan pour tourner la vidéo. Ce qui compte aussi c’est que j’ai pu revoir mon pote, et faire de la musique avec les potes et trainer avec eux, ce sont des moments authentiques.
SNS : Avec quel autre artiste aimerais-tu collaborer ?
PJ : Je suis un fan d’Ab soul de Black Hippy, un super MC de Carson, en Californie. C’est génial, il a le style que je kiffe et c’est le genre de mec avec qui vous pouvez parler aussi bien dans une superbe villa qu’à un arrêt de bus. J’aimerais travailler avec le groupe Metronomy, ce serait génial que de les avoir comme mc sur un album. Je kiffe leurs mélodies sombres et joyeuses, ce sont les maitres du genre.
SNS : Pour finir, un petit mot pour nos lecteurs ?
PJ : Oui ! bien sûr. Je suis actuellement à Mons en Belgique. C’est la première fois que je suis ici de ma vie et que je le fais sans le soutien de ceux que je connais ! C’est vraiment cool de se produire au cours d’une tournée en jouant pour des gens que je n’ai encore jamais rencontré. C’est comme si nous prenions un café ensemble pour la première fois et que vous entendiez mes morceaux.

STREET N’ SPORTS : Where does your passion for music come from?
PIGEON JOHN : It comes from the first notes I heard as a kid. I heard my mother playing Norwegian Wood by The Beatles in Nebraska and fell for the sound. Same thing with hip hop, when it came on I was blown away and stuck. I love how its very simple and instantly connects with the soul. From a single key note played on any piano or sampled kick on an MPC 2000, your soul jumps up like it wants and needs it.
SNS : You’re known in France thanks to your album Dragon Slayer, and especially the track The Bomb. How do you feel to be appreciated in France ?
PJ : I feel super dope. It’s a huge pleasure rocking ya’ll out here. I just started visiting here 3 years ago and it’s been crazy. It’s an honor. The first time I played Paris in 2011 I loved that there was no language barrier! It’s all about the the music connecting to my people. Either we all know the exact words or not, the feeling of the songs are transmitted and it’s even more genuine. Its a dream to be out here touring.
SNS : As a foreign musician, what do you think about French audience ?
PJ : I think the French audience has a very keen ear and feel for music. Being so deep in the creation of the arts, the French demand and want a new experience and they are excited when they get it. I dig the way they have art in their daily lives like they need food and water. We all need art too and the French get that in a big way.
SNS : How could you describe your new album All The Roads?
PJ : It’s an album of many styles of music. Many emotions and vibes. With Dragon Slayer I wanted to do it alone and have no special guests. With All The Roads I wanted to open it up a bit and let my friends in. Many voices and instruments making one big album. Being a hip hop artist I let go of all boudoirs and spoke from the mind and let any style of hip hop come in. I think people will dig it!
SNS : The video of your track Boomerang has just been released and we can see the French rapper 20syl featuring with you. How did this collaboration come about?
PJ : I was on tour with C2C traveling around and getting to know them even more. Really having the time of my life. They are great guys and helped me a lot. I showed them the demos for my new album All The Roads on the tour bus and 20syl really dug Boomerang. After all the touring ended I missed the guys, really did. When you tour with someone and go through things together they kinda become bloodlike. So when the tour ended I hit up 20syl to be on the song and he said yes! He killed the track, added some more production to it and then we got to hang in Brooklyn and Manhattan to shoot the video. So I got see my buddy again and thats whats it all about really. Friends making music and hanging out. Pretty simple.
SNS : Which other artist would you like to collaborate with?
PJ : Im a fan of Ab Soul of Black Hippy, super dope mc from Carson, CA. That would be dope, he has that style I dig. Like the dude you talk to in a huge mansion or a bus stop. I also would like to work with the band Metronomy, it would be dope for them to have mc’s on their albums. Dark happy melodies are my favorite and they are the masters at that.
SNS : To finish up, do you have a shoutout for our readers?
PJ : Yes! I do. I’m out here in Mons, Belgium. The first time I’m here ever in my life and I couldn’t do it without the support ya’ll! Its so cool to make music and tour and perform for people that I have never met. So in way we are having coffee for the first time when you hear my tunes. Thank you and I hope this can lead to other my steamy dates… lets dance.
